YamChops - vegetarian butcher & prepared foods shop. Coming soon to Toronto! Vegetarian and vegan: protein alternatives, prepared foods, prepared meals, specialty food products and a whole lot more.
“What’s a vegetarian butcher?” is usually the first question Jess Abramson gets asked when someone learns about YamChops. “We have made a lot of people wonder,” she says.
And a lot of the people doing the wondering aren’t vegetarians. “About half of our customers are still eating meat,” explains Jess. “They just want to reduce the amount of meat they eat without sacrificing taste and texture.”
YamChops accomplishes this in some pretty creative ways. Tunaless-Tuna is made from specially prepared chickpeas and Mongolian Beef is made from soy and wheat protein. The store is also known for its Carrot Lox, a smoked salmon served in the traditional way, sans the salmon. The taste is so convincing some may be fooled into thinking there is fish in the dish. “It’s a fun take on traditional meat dishes.”
While the goal is to provide a “centre-of-plate plant-based protein alternative” it’s not always an imitation of meat. YamChops offers salads, house-made veggie burgers and more.
A butcher shop for vegetarians, Yam Chops has a cornered a unique market in the city. From meat alternatives to Daiya products, to the famous take-home meals, Yam Chops has built a strong following in the few years that it’s been open. It’s located on College Street or you can order some of the items online.
Lucky for the healthy-minded in the 6, Canada’s first official vegan butcher finds its home in Toronto’s Little Italy. Although specializing in finely prepared vegan meat alternatives, they also pack a mean juice. In fact, they created their own brand of raw cold-pressed juices called AuJus, a playful selection that ranges from the El Greengo to the True Blood (a ruby red liver cleansing beet and orange mix). In addition to lunch and dinner delivery, Yam Chops also offers morning juice delivery.
Yam Chops is Canada’s first official ‘vegan butcher’ and purveyor of finely prepared vegan foods. The Yam Chops menu changes often and playfully transforms the most traditional meat dishes using plant-based recipes, like their Chick’n milanese and barbeque seitan ribs.
