Lackluster Pho

My friend took me to this place, claiming it had the best Pho in the city. The size of the large bowl did not impress me. The meat was tough and stringy. The noodles were overcooked and cheap. The best thing about the soup was the broth, which on its own is superior to most other pho, just too bad the rest of what is in the bowl is such poor quality. Waitress gave us some difficulty over beverages. Went in during August which is the hottest, driest times I can ever imagine, and they refused to serve us ice with our table water. They told us if we wanted ice we would have to order from the menu, so I got a coke with lemon and put my table water into the glass after finishing the pop. Needless to say, the matter of not providing inexpensive ice cost her any extra tip. The decor is nice, but they leave the lights off during the daytime. Sitting near the window, we were annoyed several times by yellowjacket wasps that were flying around trying to escape through the windows. I had to kill 2 of them using napkins!

Food was Great and the price was worth the trip

The food was exceptionally good the appetizers were very appealing the pancake was very nice with fresh lettuce and the herb wrapped beef rolls were great with the fresh rice paper, The chicken lemon grass was very good served with a bowl of noodles and salad, would definitly go again.

I've been going to Golden Turtle for over eight...

I've been going to Golden Turtle for over eight years, and it remains my favourite Vietnamese restaurant in the city. I keep coming back for the pho and bun, and the pancake and cold rolls round out any meal. The grilled pork is excellent, whether on bun or rice, and the coconut and mango shakes are a perfect finisher! The portions are perfect, and the patio is great in the summer. Highly recommended!

Don't go out of your way to come to his place...

Don't go out of your way to come to his place. Not spectacular, average at best. Their large Pho is tiny, the quail didn't taste fresh and I've had better spring rolls in food courts. If you happen to be in the neighbourhood (which is a little on the ghetto side) and happen to be really hungery, it serves a purpose. Can only comment on what I had though, don't know about the rest of the menu. Quality may have slipped since that last couple of postings.

Finding the elusive vegetarian pho in Toronto

Finding the elusive vegetarian pho in Toronto

The Golden Turtle offers a traditional Vietnamese menu featuring pho, vermicelli and rice congee, to name a few. Their interior walls are painted with large-scale, traditionally inspired murals that add to the Vietnamese vibe. The Golden Turtle’s pho menu is extensive, and while most phos contain chicken or meat, one pho is completely meat-free: Phở rau cải tàu hủ. It’s made with tofu and vegetables in a tasty noodle soup base, and your choice of either vegan or pho stock. This pho comes in two sizes, either extra-large or large, at $9 or $10 respectively.

A taste of Vietnam: Toronto's best pho restaurants

A taste of Vietnam: Toronto's best pho restaurants

Nestled on a quiet, downtown street corner is this Vietnamese treasure. As their name may suggest, the Golden Turtle’s fine Vietnamese cuisine is worth its weight in gold; the menu includes an impressive variety of traditional Vietnamese favourites, including a large pho selection. Most of their pho dishes come with rare beef, but they also offer chicken and tofu varieties. Available in three sizes - small ($7.50 or $7.75), large ($8.50 or $9.00) and extra large ($10) - the pho is affordable and filling. The restaurant’s traditional Vietnamese murals add to the authentic atmosphere.

The best restaurants on Toronto's Ossington Avenue

The best restaurants on Toronto's Ossington Avenue

The name alone twigs your curiosity, but it’s the quality of food that’ll keep you coming back for more. This Vietnamese restaurant does pho like nobody’s business, serving more than a dozen different varieties in three sizes. The broth is super tasty and you can make it as spicy as you want, with the pho ga bowl being a popular choice. For non-pho addicts, the options are many.
