Visited about 6 months ago. Halibut? Acceptable. The rest of the meal, from the frozen fries to the pre-fab (?) coleslaw, was simply typical and bland -- no better or worse than most others. Disappointed.
There aren't many places in the area where one can get fish & chips, unless they drive to Barrie and go to Fancies Fish & Chips. Blue Water Fish & Chips is a small restaurant with a tired decor. Mind you there are historical photos of boats that have travelled Georgian Bay & the Great Lakes and are interesting to look at.. We love the halibut served here. While the portion size is small it is extremely tasty, with mild tasting halibut and a golden batter. After the second or third bite you can taste & feel the grease but isn't that to be expected with deep fried fish? I've never eaten fish & chips that I haven't tasted the grease. We hate it when the restaurant is closed for vacation. We love eating here and they even have lots of newspapers and reading material for those of us that prefer to read while we're eating. All we've ever ordered has been the fish & small chips or else we'll order 2 fish and a small chip each and we never go away hungry.
Old style atmosphere, and the food is well portioned. The fish is fresh and very tasty. Old fashioned style and hand cut portions. Food is cooked to order so you might have to wait a bit but it's well worth the wait. The people are friendly and happy to serve. Hours are limited so make sure you check the times that they are open. A must stop and taste when you are in the area!
I'm picky about Fish 'n Chips, I admit it. So, when you take your first bite of this fish, you think "wow, this is awesome!", until the second or third bite when the grease has built up on your tongue and you need a scraper to get it off!! I know this is one of the most popular restaurants in town and is always packed, so I'm sure it's just me being picky. My kids thought it was okay, but also thought it was greasy. The coleslaw was awesome though and the price is reasonable for the portion! I did find the portion small compared to other places I've been, but I don't remember how the price compared to those same places. The eat-in area is small and you have to get there early if you want to eat in or you'll be waiting a long time for a table. Better to just take it home.
I was at this restaurant about a year ago and we had relatives over from Scotland, and we thought that we would try it. The fish tasted great until I noticed a fly that was cooked with the chips. Do you know that I didn't even get a "I'm sorry" or we will take that off of the bill. They didn't want to draw attention to it so they tried to ignore it. I asked to speak to someone and they said that it must have been a fly from the flypaper in the kitchen and the fan blew it into the fries while they were cooking. Charrming! THey made me feel like I had put the fly there myself. I am not one to make a scene, but if my husband would have been there he would have let the whole restaurant know that there was a fly in the food, and that the workers did not seem to care. I will never, never go back there again!!!!!!!!!!!
