Spotting and fixing common humidifier problems

If your humidifier's not working properly, these are the places to start looking for problems:

Spotting and fixing common humidifier problems

Get rid of funky smells

  • Odours usually happen because there's bacteria in the water reservoir or filtering system.
  • To kill the bacteria, clean the unit with a solution of one tablespoon of chlorine bleach per two cups of water. Or use an antibacterial cleaner recommended by the manufacturer. Rinse thoroughly with plain water.

Clear the air with a clean humidifier

  • Don't use a humidifier unless you've read the owner's manual and are prepared to keep the unit clean.
  • If not kept clean, evaporative and ultrasonic humidifiers can spew bacteria, fungi, mold and mineral dust into the air. This can lead to harmful allergy problems or illness.
  • Warm-mist humidifiers are generally safe because they boil the water they use, which distills minerals and kills bacteria, mold and fungi.
  • Mineral buildup inside a humidifier is a problem in areas with hard water. To remove calcium or lime buildup, use a solution of one part white vinegar to three parts water.
  • For really difficult cases of mineral buildup, use equal amounts of vinegar and water. Scrape off any leftover buildup with a putty knife. Wash the tank and filters with an antibacterial cleaner.
  • On humidifiers with disposable foam filters, drums or belts, buy and install replacements as directed in the owner's manual.
  • If any parts appear corroded, have them replaced.

Plug leaks

Some humidifiers have a float valve to maintain the proper water level. If the valve gets stuck because of mineral deposits, clean with a vinegar-water solution and scrape away any buildup. If it can't be cleaned or appears worn, replace the float valve.

Lubricate squeaky fans

  • Lubricate the bearings on the fan motor with a few drops of non-detergent SAE 20 oil at least once a year.
  • Some units require additional lubrication to ensure quiet and efficient functioning.
  • Check the owner's manual for your unit's lubrication schedule and recommended lubricants.

A well-lubricated and properly functioning humidifier can provide relief from dry conditions. Most problems with humidifiers can be easily spotted and, if you know what to do, you can fix them for little to know cost.
