Whether you are on a mission to find bulgur wheat, curry ketchup or packaged rose petals, Richmond is home to a number of specialty shops that sell unusual edible goodies you may not easily find elsewhere. Visiting these unique grocery stores can also feel like a mini vacation to a foreign land, and that’s always a bonus!
Twenty years ago, Fruiticana opened to fill a void for Indo-Canadian grocery items in Richmond. Today, their clientele is as diverse as the products they carry. Looking for packaged rose petals? Search no more! The shelves are lined with imported spices, reasonably priced produce, canned goods, tea and super-sized bags of rice. All sorts of wonderful finds await!
This bakery is so specialized that Nick the baker only sells one item: hearty dense Romanian bread inspired by the traditional recipes of his homeland. The artisan loaves are baked in a wood-burning oven, creating a wonderful aroma and a rustic ambience to match the bread. Don’t be surprised if you don’t spot the sign for this business. Ever since the television show Once Upon A Time began filming in Steveston, the sign “Storybrooke Country Bakery” has remained in place.
Searching for something fabulous to put on the dinner table? People travel from far afield to visit Heringers, which is known for its grass-fed, high quality meat, beautifully presented in glass display cases alongside a rotating selection of house-made meals. Prepared entrees include a crowd-pleasing meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and perfectly marinated meats for the barbecue – nobody needs to know you didn’t slave all day in the kitchen.
Psst, foodies…I’m going to let you in on one of my best discoveries. From Indian to Asian, Caribbean, Mexican, Middle Eastern, British goodies, and more, Exotic International Market carries a plethora of imported products that’ll surprise your tastebuds. Here you will find quinoa, bulgur wheat, tortilla chips, mango pulp, and a full wall of their own packaged spices at very fair prices. The homemade pakoras, sold fresh at the end of the week, are well worth the trip.

In addition, prepared food is sold daily and is posted on the shop’s website. Party trays are another great way to sample Filipino flavours.
