Great Chinese restaurants to try out in Montreal

Chinese restaurants are a dime a dozen in just about every big city. But finding the good ones, the authentic tables, can be a challenge. Let us save you the trouble with these tried and true Montreal Chinese restaurants where you are sure to enjoy a delicious Chinese meal. From simple to gourmet, these are all good bets.

L'Orchidée de Chine

1
2017, rue Peel, Montréal, QC H3A 1T6

A refined (and more expensive) establishment, the Hunan-Pekinese cuisine here is great for a special occasion. If they happen to have the Chilean sea bass on the night you are there, do not hesitate. Otherwise try the crispy duck or orange beef.

Restaurant Beijing

2
92 De La Gauchetière O, Montréal, QC H2Z 1C1

A very popular Cantonese and Szechuan spot in Chinatown, Beijing should be on every Chinese restaurant list. It has been around for a long time, serves up great food and they are open very late too. Two musts are the lobster in ginger sauce and the Singapore noodles.

La Maison V I P

3
1077, rue Clark, Montréal, QC H2Z 1K3

Here is another longstanding Chinatown restaurant with a menu that has been mostly untouched over the years. No need to change a good thing! We love the salt and pepper shrimp here and the sautéed eggplant. They also have a great lunch special and are open late.

Niukee

4
1163 Clark Street, Montréal, QC H2X 2R1

This great place might put off most people with its dodgy exterior. Don’t let that stop you. Inside you will find a simple place with wonderful northern Chinese dishes, like the spicy shrimp. Don’t be afraid to try something different like the cumin lamb, though.

Restaurant Shi Tang

5
1622, boul de Maisonneuve O, Montréal, QC H3H 1J5

Shi Tang means “canteen”. You could walk by this place and be unimpressed – the decor is simple, but the menu is not. Lots of Concordia students and Chinese families congregate here to try a menu that is different from the usual Chinese offering (it’s also not translated, so unless you read Chinese, just point to what you want. Try the baozis (steamed buns) or shao bing (stuffed pancake) with a layer of braised pork.

Plâts De Pates Hong Mère

6
3795, rue Wellington, Verdun, QC H4G 1V1

This unassuming Verdun address serves really amazing authentic Szechuan fare at very reasonable prices. Make sure you ask for the “other menu”. Lots of offal dishes if you are a fan. A safer bet is the popular stir-fried green beans with chili and pork.

Since 1987, the Festival Nuits d’Afrique has been enchanting Montrealers with its unique performances and workshops. Taking place from July 12 to 24, this year’s show features works by local artists as well as talented creators from the Antilles, Africa and Latin America.
