You aren’t at the gym to swim, for a drop-in class or to do hours of cardio; you’re there to lift! These gyms are for those serious lifters who don’t want any distractions.
Evolve is an open-concept powerlifting and strength training gym located in south Edmonton. The gym has exceptional equipment, including 15 lifting platforms, two powerlifting competition platforms and Eleiko bumpers and barbells. The gym has a community feel because it also houses massage therapy, acupuncture, nutrition, physiotherapy and yoga, in addition to the gym facilities. You can get everything you need at Evolve, for a very reasonable monthly fee without the hassle of a contract.
Though this gym may be small and it has only one of most machines, racks and cages, it’s my favourite of the Snap Fitness gyms in Edmonton, and I’ve been to almost all of them. Don’t let the size deter you. This gym is quiet, the equipment is well cared for, the membership fee is very reasonable (and contract-free) and it has a large room equipped with punching bags and mats for stretching. Plus, this is a true 24-hour gym for members. Come any time, day or night.
Located further south than the Calgary Trail location, this Snap Fitness is a larger facility with two levels. The cardio equipment is upstairs, while the machines and lifting racks are downstairs. These two locations have the same owner; Corey hires knowledgeable staff and trainers, keeps the equipment in good condition and ensures members get excellent value for their money.
Axxis Gym is located in an industrial area in southeast Edmonton. An old school gym with plenty of machines, cages and cardio equipment, Axxis caters to everyone. You’ll likely see lots of bodybuilders, power lifters and competitors at this gym. Axxis has a kitchen and sells stir fries, wraps and smoothies to take care of your pre and post workout meals. Axxis Gym is open Monday to Friday from 5:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends.
The MacEwan Centre for Sport and Wellness underwent a large renovation several years ago and the outcome is a more functional space filled with excellent equipment. There is a new section dedicated to powerlifting, which boasts an Olympic lift platform and new lifting racks. Overall, I was really impressed with the improvements.
L.A. Fitness is new in Edmonton and has a lot of square footage. This location is just off Whitemud Drive and Calgary Trail. From the outside, it’s elegant and modern. Inside, there are plenty of machines, racks, courts and group training rooms to help you accomplish your workout.
The Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre is a community hotspot with lots of options for the public. It has plenty of machines, racks and cardio equipment and is close to a transit centre for easy access. The facility is clean and well equipped to ensure you have a good workout.
