Catch of the day: Where to net fish and chips in Calgary

A surprising number of Calgary restaurants specialize in fish and chips as well as a good number of eateries that serve especially good takes on this staple comfort dish. The following spots serve especially good fish and chips.

British Chippy The

1
2335 162 Ave SW, Calgary, AB T2Y 4S6

This authentic British fish-and-chip restaurant features two locations: one in Bridlewood, the other in Okotoks. The menu offers a cod or haddock fish-and-chips entree featuring crisp, lightly battered wild-caught fish. The dish is served with organic, hand-cut chips cooked in non-GMO vegetable oil. The British Chippy is also licensed, which means you can enjoy your meal with a cold can of Boddingtons.

Pelican Pier

2
10-4404 14 St NW, Calgary, AB T2K 1J5

A 72-seat seafood restaurant, Pelican Pier also houses a small seafood market. The eatery’s gut-busting menu of seafood entrees includes fish tacos, fish and chips and more. The fish-and-chips dishes include a choice of haddock, cod, salmon or halibut served with fries, salad or soup. Seriously consider substituting Pelican Pier’s Manhattan must-try clam chowder for the fries. The restaurant offers a light batter alternative to its regular panko breading crust.

Joey’s Seafood Restaurants

3
25-9250 Macleod Tr. SE, Calgary, AB T2J 0P5

This Canadian seafood restaurant chain serves battered fish that’s light and crispy on the outside and flaky fish on the inside. Choose between halibut, haddock or cod. For the indecisive, there’s the Triple Catch three-piece meal featuring one piece each of halibut, haddock and cod. Entrees are served with seasoned French fries and coleslaw. Add a side of mushy peas to enjoy your meal the traditional English way.

Halibut House

4
336 9 Ave NE, Calgary, AB T2E 0V6

Halibut House is a tiny mom-and-pop seafood eatery offering friendly service and massive portions, and its menu features much more than its namesake halibut. Also choose from a dozen varieties of fish including sole, red snapper and basa as well as clam strips. Pair your fish (or clams) with house-made fries, onion rings or fried zucchini sticks.

Big Fish

5
1112 Edmonton Trail NE, Calgary, AB T2E 3K4

A casual seafood restaurant on Edmonton Trail Northeast, Big Fish is a cozy eatery and oyster bar. Its fish-and-chips lunch entree features beer-battered walleye served with chips and creamy lemon caper mayonnaise. Drop in over the weekend for Big Fish’s steelhead trout and spinach hash, a sumptuous brunch take on classic fish and chips. The entree features pan-fried trout and spinach hash served with basil hollandaise sauce and perfectly poached eggs.

Sea Fish N Chip Inc

6
45 High St SE, Calgary, AB T2Z 3T7

While most fish-and-chip restaurants offer haddock or cod served with French fries, this eatery in Mackenzie Town serves a massive variety of tasty fish and seafood. Diners can choose from haddock, cod, halibut, salmon, oyster, jumbo prawns or scallops. Although chips are the suggested accompaniment, the menu also features yam fries, onion rings, taters, mushy peas and coleslaw.

Ship & Anchor Pub

7
534 17th Avenue SW, Calgary, AB T2S 0B1

One of the most popular meals offered at this well-loved 17th Avenue Southwest pub is a massive serving of cod battered in Grasshopper Ale batter and served with tartar sauce, fennel coleslaw and fries. This gut-busting dish is arguably the most filling option on the entire Ship & Anchor menu.

Cat 'N Fiddle Pub

8
540 16 Ave Nw, Calgary, AB T2M 0J4

This neighbourhood Celtic tavern serves up a traditional fish-and-chips dish of crispy, beer-battered cod served with fresh coleslaw, pub fries and tangy, house-made tartar sauce. Priced to move, it’s the evening special on Fridays. Enjoy some post-meal fun at the bar’s pool tables and dart boards.

Chicken On The Way

9
1443 Kensington Rd NW, Calgary, AB T2N 3R1

Although this fast-food joint is loved by Calgarians for its deep-fried chicken, Chicken On The Way also serves fish and chips. The batter-fried fish is served with a heaping portion of French fries and is one of the most economically priced two-piece fish-and-chip meals you’ll find.

One of the most festive Calgary events of the summer, Marda Gras is a New Orleans-themed street festival that runs August 13, 2017, in the heart of the Marda Loop community. Since Marda Loop is one of the best dining communities in the city, make sure to stop in to one of these eateries while you’re in the area.
With Calgary’s warm weather (hopefully) here to stay, the city’s food truck scene is entering its busiest time of year. Since there are so many delicious mobile eateries to choose from, YYC Food Trucks has organized Picnic in the Park, a two-day food frenzy that takes place May 27 and 28 in Murdock Park in Bridgeland. Here are six food trucks you need to check out while you’re there. [Photo credit: YYC Food Trucks]
