the owner did not even have the courtesy to return my calls.
The rolls are to die for! I had the 3 meat cannelloni but found the pasta too thick & tough and the meat filling was too chunky. They added far too much tomato sauce to the dish. My friend had the Chicken Marsala and was pleased with that entree - chicken was moist and veggies firm. The dish looked quite lovely. We finished off our meal with the traditional Tiramisu which was quite tasty but quite a small serving.
What is the purpose to go to a restaurant? Of course to eat delicious food is the first motivation. I have to admit, that Zolas did a good job designing their website. It looks pretty inviting to me. So I decided to go there with my wife. The interior decoration in Zolas looks attractive and modern. Their kitchen is half open like in those fusion restaurants. But when you get closer to watch those decoration, materials seem to be cheap and crude. But that is not the point, after all, you expect to taste the "modern" Italian cuisine. I ordered pasta primavera as I usually would not order some fancy stuff in my first visit to a restaurant. And this is the pasta you can hardly screw up. But to my surprise, it did not impress me at all. The pasta was not well boiled, the inner part was still hard. They put too much olive oil and seasoning, which made the pasta smelled good, but tasted oily and tedious. I felt as if I was eating the plain boiled pasta after I dipped them in the sauce, not a complete mixture of a fine cuisine cooked with the matching sauces. My wife ordered Portabello Frocaccia, and it was over grilled and a little burnt so she didn't even finish half of it. I love to cook and I lived and worked in Europe for years. I am confident to say, I cook better Primavera than this so called "modern" Italian restaurant. The waitress looked nice, but when you asked for a replacement of a fork, it took ages. The price was ok, not expensive, but not cheap either. Well, I thought it would had been my last visit there. I talked with my friend who was there before, she had the same "poor cooking" comment. But she thought dinner time, the atmosphere was romantic and mysterious, and music was not bad there. But to me, no matter how trendy and stylish it looks, how nice music you can listen to there, it is a restaurant, not a entertaining room or tavern. If the food cannot reach the standard, the service is so-so, the price doesn't seem to be more competitive than any other small restaurants. Why do I have to go there again? Fairwell, Zolas!
Decided to try Zola's breakfast again...it was excellent. I had breakfast several months previously and did not find it very good. However this visit was excellent. I had the breakfast special...two eggs over easy with sausage and homefries. The eggs and sausage were very good. The home fries are at least equal to any I have tasted in the city. breakfast come with a fabulous fresh fruit cup and a rosemary spiced grilled tomatoe and great artisan ancient grain bread. I have finally found my breakfast place of choice. No need to go elsewhere best breakfast in the city.
Decided to stop in for Breakfast on a Sunday. It was around 10am and only two other tables occupied. Can be a bad sign but we were pleasantly surprised. It smelled like fresh bread baking. We both had the eggs benedict -medium poach-this is the only place that has gotten it perfectly done. A runny egg white can be off putting. It came with a grilled tomato, small fruit salad and a small amount of real home fries(plenty for us girls, a bigger appetite maybe not) I wasn't impressed with the addition of mint(or basil) in the fruit salad as it had darkened and was hard to identify but I ate it all. Service was attentive with coffee refills and the orange juice was only $1.50.
