Nestled into Broadway in trendy Kitsilano is Stepback, a cozy shop with neatly arranged vintage and vintage-style items that will have shoppers cruising for hours. Each corner has a stylishly arranged vignette with ever-changing items, from crafty cards to antique silver tea sets and even furniture, while classic tunes murmur overhead. There’s something for everyone at Stepback, with unique finds to make the perfect vintage-styled home with collectible knickknacks that speak to years gone by.
Chris Switzer and his wife, Robin Muxlow, opened Stepback in 2005. Despite differing careers, they share a passion for the styling of their home, which they purchased just around the corner from the current shop location. While out for a neighbourhood walk, they saw the space for lease and decided to open their own store to allow their passion for vintage become a business.
“My parents have always collected and that’s all I did growing up; flea markets, auctions and garage sales,” says Chris. With a mutual love of collectibles and zero retail experience, Robin and Chris have created a experience that seems a mix of both shopping and nostalgia.
A vintage store with style to spare, this Kitsilano shop is the perfect place to pick up a cool retro typewriter, old-school map, vintage suitcase, or hip taxidermy item. The space is set up like a classroom, but a really cool classroom filled with funky knick-knacks and inspiring design ideas. From small gift items to full-sized furniture, the range of products and prices includes some new items made to match the retro feel.
Vintage lovers rejoice! You will delight with glee when you discover all of the holiday treasures just waiting for you at Stepback. Nestled along West Broadway, Stepback is a charming antique emporium filled with one-of-a-kind pieces for your home. Add some sparkle to your tree with shiny vintage glass ornaments that have a nostalgic-yet-timeless appeal.
Taxidermy and decorative antlers might not be on your must-have list for back-to-school, but these quirky gems are sure to inject some style into a sterile dorm room. This Kitsilano shop is stocked with a curated selection of antique fair finds and newer vintage-inspired items. Add some nostalgic charm to your downtown dwelling with old wooden farmhouse crates (great for storing books and binders) or string up a few vintage pennants. Aspiring writers will love the old fashioned typewriters while doctors-in-training can decorate their space with antique apothecary items and medical prints.
