Founded in 1979, Arts Umbrella started as the vision of several passionate parents who wanted proper arts training for their children. Starting in the basement of one of the parents with just 45 students, Arts Umbrella has grown to become a major arts facility with several locations serving thousands of students every year. Today, the school offers arts-based learning programs spanning five artistic categories: dance, theatre, visual arts, music and digital arts.

“We have such an exciting, creative atmosphere,” says Lucille Pacey, the CEO of Arts Umbrella. “Every day, I see young people skipping into their class because they’re so excited and happy to be here. Their work is very inspiring.”

Directed toward children and young adults aged two to 19, Arts Umbrella is built on a foundation of providing proper arts training and techniques to students. “We encourage every student to follow their passion,” explains Lucille. “We know every student won’t grow up to be an artist. However, the skills they learn here are so important for any ambition: respect, discipline, commitment and creativity are valuable traits for everyone.”

Summer camps and creative classes for Vancouver kids

Summer camps and creative classes for Vancouver kids

This non-profit education center on Granville Island has been around for over 30 years; I actually took a course here when I was in high school! Summer camp, spring break camps, Pro-D day camps and year-round programming are on offer and are very much geared toward inspiring kids through visual and performing arts. The school reaches over 20,000 kids annually and aims to promote the various lifelong benefits of an arts education, including enhanced critical thinking and collaboration among peers. They offer pre-school art classes to pre-professional dance classes for teens and everything in between.
