The idea for the Network Hub — which offers on-demand workspace to entrepreneurs, freelancers and digital start-ups — started over a decade ago from the frustrated conversations of three friends. All three were accomplished web developers and database programmers, but in terms of finding a suitable place to work, their age worked against them. Two were in their first year of university; one was still in high school.
“We were looking for office space, but no landlord was willing to rent to a group of young people, even with cash flow and a bank account,” says co-founder Jay Catalan. “So early on we saw the need for professional workspace, particularly for digital nomads like us.”
Jay and his two partners launched the first Network Hub in Gastown in 2006, while he was in the last year of university. “I was running around looking for the best deals on wooden floors in-between classes,” he recalls. “We'd be painting the space until 3:00 am and heading to early morning calculus class the next day.”
Since then, following coverage by CNN, Mashable and Forbes, two new Hubs have popped up in Whistler and New Westminster. Prices are reasonable, and the benefits are many, whether patrons choose by-the-hour “hotdesking” in an open-concept room, or a dedicated private office.
