Angela Zawada was going to school in Edmonton on a volleyball scholarship at the University of Alberta when she first discovered yoga. “It was challenging but I found it to be very easy on my joints, which was important for my volleyball career,” says Angela. When she graduated from university, the aspiring athlete, who was originally from Ontario, started to explore her new passion even more. “After university, I saw many studios that were changing from bikram yoga to moksha yoga, and I fell in love with the practice,” she says. During a visit to her home in Ontario, she tried out moksha yoga and was hooked, so she travelled to Thailand for training and set up Moksha Yoga Edmonton shortly after she returned.
Moksha yoga is a specific type of yoga that’s always performed in a warm environment. But, according to Angela, moksha is about more than the temperature of the room. “Moksha is based on seven pillars. Education, accessibility, community involvement and being green are all a part of it,” says Angela. “Moksha is meant to be with you in your life, on and off the mat.”

My usual Sunday class was cancelled so a friend and I tried Moksha on 111th. The instructor gets an A (Jen I believe). well sequenced class, options given, and despite 40 diverse people with divergent skill sets, she managed the class well. The studio gets an F. The floor was filthy, the stereo crackled during savasana, and for an 18 buck drop in, I would expect a cold towel at the end of class. Personally, I will avoid the Moksha name brand in the future.
Moksha is a great workout with lots of different sequences depending on the teacher - each class is different and can be a warm or hot room - bring a towel and lots of water - love moksha yoga studios - they are always so nice!
